In the wake of an alarming increase in accidents across the country which have caused immense pain to many families, leaving children orphaned, others widowed and whole families deprived of their sole breadwinners, an initiative to set up road safety awareness and traffic injury surveillance has been launched.
The initiative by KCA university in collaboration with Technical University of Dortmund in Germany seeks to reduce road carnages in the country that have further left thousands with lifelong injuries that remind them of their near brush with death.
Recent data from National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) reveals that 7,198 Kenyans have been involved in road accidents between January and April 2024, an increase of 1,908 people in the same period last year.
NTSA says pedestrians account for the highest fatalities in 2024 at 436 which is an increase compared to 374 of last year.
The pedestrians were followed by motorcyclists at 276 fatalities which is a decrease from 311 in 2023.
It is the rising accident numbers that have informed establishment of the road safety awareness centre which will be the first of its kind in the country.
According to KCA university vice chancellor Prof. Isaiah Wakindiki, the centre seeks to facilitate the reduction of road accidents in Kenya through research, innovation and knowledge.
The one-stop center for scientific data gathering and transmission is hoped to trigger policy formulation, discovery and innovation in the area of road transport across the country.
Speaking at the University’s main campus in Ruaraka, Wakindiki quipped that the Technical University of Dortmund in Germany is helping in development of the initial stages of the center, which is expected to be completed by the end of this year.
“We are currently on a three-month scientific visit in Germany and among other things, our faculty members are collecting data and fine-tuning the setting up of the centre which we believe will go a long way in helping save lives along our roads,” said Wakindiki.
Other government agencies such as the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) have also been brought on board to streamline the collection and analysis of road carnage data which he described as essential in getting to the root causes and ultimately developing solutions through education, advocacy and policy-making.
“We are mobilizing resources for the establishment of the center and part of the Sh 15 million the institution seeks to raise in the second edition of the VC&CEO Cycling Tour will be spent on the center,” he revealed.
The VC decried that the University has been losing at least a student to a road accident every year, an issue he said has become a major concern to the University.
“On average we are losing a student per year through road carnage. This year alone, from January to date, we have already lost a student,” he said.
He said that KCA has decided to take the bull by its horns and conduct extensive research as well as build up innovations with an aim of ending the perennial road carnage menace.
He noted that the University is keen to provide solutions to problems facing the society through research and innovations.
