Institutions of higher learning have been urged to accelerate their role in underpinning innovation and entrepreneurial activities among learners for social-economic progress of the society.
During the inaugural interuniversity Power Learn Project Hackathon held at Zetech University, institutions of higher education were challenged to support young innovators to foster emergence of breakthrough ideas to solve pressing global challenges.
Zetec University Vice Chancellor Professor Njenga Munene expressed the need for institutions of academia to foster entrepreneurial and technological talents among students with a keen focus on innovative solutions that align with sustainable development goals.
The competition that saw over 300 students from universities across the country participate focused on Hacking Solutions for a Sustainable Future, Building Innovative Tools for All among other thematic areas.
Students were inspired to develop cutting-edge technological solutions addressing global sustainability challenges.
In the competitions, a group of students from various universities dubbed as SheSafe Innovation claimed the top prize after presenting a groundbreaking solution designed to combat financial fraud and theft in Kenya.
The project empowers individuals by providing critical information based on real-life experiences, helping them navigate financial threats more effectively.
The second-place award went to another team that developed the Smart Sewage Monitoring System, which enhances sewage management efficiency through real-time monitoring and data analytics.
Zetech University students Kevin Gitau and Moses Majengo also shone brightly, securing third place with their innovative project, AirSafi.
This Internet of Things (IoT) solution monitors the air quality index, providing real-time notifications to communities and industries about pollution levels.
AirSafi aims to promote healthier living environments by enabling proactive measures against air pollution.
“The Power Hackathon has highlighted the immense potential of young innovators in creating impactful solutions for pressing global issues. As a university, we reaffirm our commitment to nurturing technological advancements and entrepreneurial skills among our students by providing them with the requisite resources.
As these young minds continue to push the boundaries of technological possibilities, the Power Hackathon stands as a testament to the transformative power of innovation and collaboration in achieving sustainable development goals,” said Prof. Munene.
