Days after president Uhuru Kenyatta lifted a nationwide curfew, which has been in place since March last year to curb the spread of the coronavirus, Kenyans have been warned of a possible development of a new wave of Covid-19 in November.
While cautioning Kenyans to be vigilant and take all the laid down measures in the prevention of Covid-19, Sarah Karanja, the wife of Kiambu governor James Nyoro maintained that Kenyans must continue observing the health protocols set for them to remain safe from contracting the deadly virus.
Karanja regretted that most Kenyans have started to disregard the protocols since the curfew was lifted with most now greeting each other without fear.
She said that failure to observe the protocols might push the country back to lockdown and the curfew situation should the forecasted wave stage a health crisis.
At the same time, Karanja urged Kenyans to continue getting inoculated for them to remain safe from the virus that has sent many to the graves and devastated livelihoods through closure of businesses and loss of jobs.
“Covid-19 is still with us despite the fact that most protocols have been relaxed. We should uphold a personal responsibility of adhering the set health guidelines for us to remain safe,” she said.
Speaking at Kimuchu Primary School in Thika where she, alongside Flying Doctors had organized a free medical camp that coincided with breast cancer awareness initiative, the Kiambu county first lady decried that despite their poor eating habits, most Kenyans have not been exercising to keep their bodies fit.
She specifically regretted that most residents in Kiambu County and central regions were suffering from diabetes which is associated with poor diets and failure to keep their bodies fit.
At the same time, the first lady revealed plans to upgrade Makongeni Health Centre that serves hundreds of persons per day to a level three hospital for better services to patients who are forced to go for specialized treatment at Thika Level Five Hospital.
Her sentiments were echoed by Raphael Chege, the area MCA who announced that the facility is slated for upgrade upto to a level four hospital, a development that will be done in stages.
“Our ward is the largest in terms of population. To serve our people better, we have laid down plans to improve the standards of health services offered here and in stages, the hospital will be upgraded up to a level four facility,” said Chege.
The over 500 residents who turned up for various services among them screening of several forms of cancer among other ailments lauded the initiative and urged the government to conduct regular free medical camps as most of them cannot afford hospital fees.
They further urged the government to expedite implementation of universal health coverage to ensure that they all access both essential healthcare services and mechanisms to protect them from financial hardship or poverty because of out-of-pocket healthcare payments.
