Graduands during yesterday's rehearsal at MKU Pavilion ahead of today's graduation ceremony




10 PHD students from Mount Kenya University will be among in excess of 5000 graduands who will be graduating during the institution’s 17th graduation ceremony to be held tomorrow (Friday 6) at its graduation pavilion in happy valley, Thika of Kiambu County.

Out of the PhD grandaunds will be 6 males and 4 females.


According to MKU Deputy Vice Chancellor, Academic Research Affair, Dr. Bibianne Waiganjo, a total of 5,169 grandaunds will be awarded certificates, diploma and conferred degrees during the event that will be presided over by MKU chancellor Prof. John Struthers.

The chief guest will be Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha.

Waiganjo said 119 graduands will be conferred with masters while 3844 will be conferred degrees in various fields.


In total 2,738 will be male and 2431 female graduands.

The school of education will have the lion share with a total of 2,438 followed by school of business and economics with 1,175 graduands.

Meanwhile, a 24-hour security operation in Thika and its environs has been installed to ensure the graduation ceremony goes on smoothly.


Thika East Senior Assistant County Commissioner Onesmus Muriuki who happens to be the chairman of the graduation security committee said his team was up to the security task ahead.

Speaking during the graduation rehearsal at the


graduation pavilion in happy valley, the officer said the teams from Thika East and West Sub-Counties have been meeting to identify areas of concern and address them.

“In order to manage the huge crowd, there will be 10 sectors with each being manned by a security commander to ensure everyone enjoy the ceremony,” he said.
