With less than two years to the general election, Kiambu gubernatorial position has already started to attract various quarters.
The highly coveted seat is currently being held by Governor James Nyoro who took over from his former boss Ferdinand Waititu after his impeachment over allegations of gross misconduct, gross violation of the Constitution and PFM Act.
Waititu has since remained undercover with only few low key public visits.
Among persons who are reported to be eying leadership of the county that has produced two presidents are holding various leadership positions in the county.
Among them is the current Woman representative Gathoni Wamuchomba, Senator Kimani Wamatangi, Thika MP Patrick Wainaina, Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria alongside the sitting governor.
According to sources, the race for the Kiambu gubernatorial position will be a battle of the titans as the former county Chief William Kabogo is also reported to been seeking to regain the position after suffering in the political cold for years since his ouster.
Waititu silenced Kabogo in 2017 general elections after garnering 353,604 votes against Kabogo’s 69,916.
Although the mentioned leaders have delayed going public on their quest to lead the populous yet very rich county, signs, rumours and claims from their close allies cannot be underestimated.
Kiambu residents have been seeking to have a leader who will deliver projects that have a positive impact on their livelihoods and one that would closely associate and interact with them.
While most election winners at the county qualify for positions based on propaganda and not their good ideologies, residents say a paradigm shift will have a leader and not a politician take over the leadership of the county.
According to them, outspoken politicians have for a long time taken them for a ride after assuming offices, a narrative they want to change for a leader who will not only listen to their grievances but one who will offer solutions to their longstanding economic challenges.
Just recently, governor Nyoro has been embroiled in a tussle with Thika MP Wainaina after his bodaboda shades put up in various sub counties were allegedly destroyed by officers from the county.
In a mighty show of political physiques, the shades in Gatundu North, South and Ruiru Sub Counties were erected by the first time independent MP who is recounted to be eying a higher office.
Their destruction resulted to ugly incidents and protests from bodaboda riders who have been accusing Nyoro of playing dirty politics at the expense of their good shelter.
But the county has since dismissed the claims with a top county official saying the MP failed to follow the laid down planning policies.
On his part, Wainaina says he will continue to support youth in all corners the country and urged leaders to instead of gimmicks compliment what he has been doing for the benefit of the common.
Political realignments at the county are also reported to be happening with a section of leaders already having started to meet to discuss their future.
The unrequited question now is who Kiambu electorates will entrust with the leadership of the county for the next five years.
