Mount Kenya University’s medical school has been listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools (WDMS), a significant accomplishment that will help students from the institution work abroad with ease.
The move by the directory which lists more than 4,000 medical schools in operation around the world will see MKU medical degrees recognized in USA, UK and Canada, opening doors for doctors trained by the university to work in the foreign nations.
In the list, the USA’s Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)) says ‘graduates of this school are eligible to apply to ECFMG for ECFMG Certification and for examination…“
Also, as posted on the World Directory of Medical Schools, “…Medical degrees obtained from this medical school are acceptable to the provincial/territorial medical authorities in Canada, and therefore acceptable to all medical organisations in Canada.”
Last year, the United Kingdom’s (UK) General Medical Council (GMC) granted recognition to MKU’s Medical School. The GMC sets standards that doctors and their trainers must meet.
The mission of the World Directory of Medical Schools (World Directory) to list all of the medical schools in the world, with accurate, up-to-date, and comprehensive information on each school aims at helping prospective students and medical regulatory authorities make informed decisions about medical schools and their graduates.
It also seeks to inform researchers and members of the public about the characteristics of current and past programs of medical education around the world.
Speaking during the 24th MKU graduation ceremony held in Thika town last year, Vice Chancellor , Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said the university has introduced three new programmes: Master of Pharmacy in Cosmetic Technology, Master of Pharmacy in Industrial Pharmacy, and Master of Science in Industrial Pharmacognosy and Traditional Medicine under the College of Health Sciences which houses Medical School, School of Pharmacy, School of Clinical Medicine, School of Nursing, School of Public Health and School of Nursing.
The College of Health sciences has produced thousands of graduates serving in local and international institutions offering Healthcare services to communities.
