More than 200 bodaboda riders from Witethie ward and Juja constituency, Kiambu County have received financial management, customer service and business management training to equip them with skills to grow their businesses.
The training, which took place at the Zetech University Technologypark in Mang’u was facilitated by among others, officials from the Kenya Revenue Authority and Traffic Police as part of the University’s Community Outreach activities to celebrate 25 years of scholarly excellence.
According to Prof. Alice Njuguna, the DVC Academics, Research& Student Affairs, universities need to use their resources to cultivate cordial relationships with the community in ways that contribute positively and address the community’s needs and concerns.
Data from the Motorcycle Assembly Association of Kenya shows that the motorcycle (bodaboda) business in Kenya generates about Sh 400 million daily, which translates to 3.4 percent of Kenya’s GDP.
Njuguna therefore expressed the need for stakeholders in the education and government sectors to empower SMEs in the bodaboda sectors and help them explore ways through which they can expand their businesses.
“We must make the community around us feel as being part of us. This will facilitate co-existence,” said Njuguna.
“Boda-bodas in Kenya are mostly owned by low-income earners and the profit margins are not high enough to provide a decent living but with empowerment, we can help them become more productive and grow economically using the very little they earn,” added Njuguna.
Some of the bodaboda operators present revealed that the training will go a long way in helping them evade preventable accidents and effectively manage their finances for more productivity.
